The book Textbook of Interventional Cardiology is written by Eric J. Topol MD, and Paul S. Teirstein MD. The Seventh Edition of the Textbook of Interventional Cardiology has been more up-to-date than any previous edition. We have tried to fully capture the excitement and relentless maturation of the field of interventional cardiology. New chapters have been added to address radiation safety, heart failure interventions, and (for many patients) the lack of need for hospitalization after procedures. Over the years, the coronary intervention has become increasingly predictable and, in many ways, routine, with the progressive maturation of stents and advances in our adjunctive drug therapies.
In a way, the field of interventional cardiology lost a bit of the pioneering spark that had characterized the discipline so much since its inception in the 1980s. In those heady days, performing coronary artery balloon angioplasty was hit or miss. The predictability provided by stents was replaced by the predictability of stent thrombosis. Interventional cardiologists and scientists had to not only rise to the challenge for each individual patient but also discover the vital innovations that would perpetuate the specialty’s prominence and importance.
About the Author
Eric Topol is one of the most influential cardiologists and scientists in the world, a true “rock star in cardiology.” NIH research studies, his widely adopted medical innovations, and his frequent appearances on television shows. He is the founding director of the Scripps Translational Institute, where large, multidisciplinary teams investigate medical innovations in practice, research, and education for the future of medicine. Due to Dr. Topol’s incredibly busy schedule and the fact that Dr. Teirstein served as Senior Editor on the current edition, Dr. Topol has proposed a succession plan for the revision, with his colleague Dr. Teirstein officially as lead editor and the addition of his colleague Dr. Price as a second new editor and a title change from Textbook of Interventional Cardiology to Topol’s Textbook of Interventional Cardiology.
Paul Teirstein, MD, is Chief of Cardiology, Director of Interventional Cardiology, and Medical Director of Scripps Prebys Heart and Vascular Institute/Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California.
Overview of Textbook of Interventional Cardiology
Ideal for cardiologists, surgeons, and referring physicians who need clinical guidance for interventional procedures, the Textbook of Interventional Cardiology focuses on the latest treatment protocols to manage cardiac disorders at all levels of complexity. In this updated edition, Dr. Topol continues to bring together experts in the field who present the current state of knowledge and clinical practice in interventional cardiology, including cutting-edge theories, trends, and applications of diagnostic and interventional cardiology, as well as peripheral cardiology. Vascular techniques and practices.
