According to Damia Barcelo: A topic that began to receive more attention from environmental scientists in the late 1990s was the transport of pharmaceuticals into the environment through their use in human and veterinary medical practices and personal care. Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) comprise a remarkably diverse range of thousands of unique chemicals, most of which are purchased for direct use by consumers and medical and agricultural practices. Of the so-called “emerging” pollutants, PPCPs perhaps serve as prototypical examples because they amply illustrate the many dimensions and new questions associated with unregulated pollutants. Of the many aspects that distinguish them from conventional pollutants, one that defines them is their diffuse and dispersed origin from the combined and varied actions, behaviors, and activities of multitudes of individuals. At the same time, many of these compounds experience significant parallel uses in agriculture. As commodities, each individual’s minuscule contributions, while meaningless on their own, combine to produce measurable environmental waste. Although pollutants from nonpoint sources and sources are not fully amenable to engineering solutions to control their entry into the environment, the potential for significant reductions is possible through comprehensive environmental management strategies, such as pollution prevention.
Of the many aspects of PPCPs as environmental contaminants, this chapter focuses on just two: the sources and their management. Numerous sources and pathways serve to transport PPCPs into the environment after use by humans and animals. Some have origins from natural and anthropogenic sources. After all, the design of many synthetic drugs was modeled or inspired by natural substances that possess extraordinary pharmacological activity.

About the Author

Damia Barceló obtained a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Barcelona in 1984 and was a Post-doctoral at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, NL between 1985-86. He is currently a Professor of Research at the Institute for Environmental Assessment and Water Studies IDAEA-CSIC (Barcelona, ​​​​Spain) since 1999 and Director of the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) (Girona, Spain) since May 2008. From 2009-2015 Visiting Professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 2009-2015. Full Professor of the Chair of Biology in the Faculty of Sciences under the Distinguished Scientists Fellowship Program (DSFP) at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, since October 2016.
