- The list of monographs first included in British Pharmacopoeia 2022 is given at the end of this introduction. It includes 20 new monographs of national origin and 38 new monographs reproduced from the 10th edition of the European Pharmacopoeia, as amended in Supplements 10.1 to 10.5.
- As the Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads, British Pharmacopoeia has pledged to keep its customers up to date and support a wider healthcare response. As part of this, British Pharmacopoeia has prioritized the continued availability of written and physical standards, while also collaborating staff and expertise in the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and internationally. Participated in pharmacopoeial measures. The availability of British Pharmacopoeia standards has been enhanced, including the publication of free access to auxiliary pharmacopoeia text in support of European Pharmacopoeia. It ensures that those who develop, manufacture and test drugs in response to COVID-19 infectious diseases have access to the required standards.

Analytical Quality by Design
British Pharmacopoeia, in collaboration with MHRA and stakeholders, is continuing to investigate the application of design principles through analytical methods and standards in pharmacopoeia. A number of AQbD concepts have been put into practice in collaboration with the British Pharmacopoeia Commission Laboratory, and the Australian Therapeutics Administration. MHRA published the results of these studies in public consultation.
The consultative responses emphasized the importance of AQbD concepts, which are potentially transformative catalysts for enabling innovation for analytical methods and ultimately for further support in drug quality assurance. The result of the consultation is the adoption of a strategy and accompanying work program that will continue to advance this important field of regulatory science. The first result of this work program, a supplementary chapter on the use of analytical standards through design concepts for analytical methods, is included in this publication. This supplementary chapter, which provides selective guidance, will assist users in applying analytical standards through design principles throughout the pharmacopoeial method and the entire analytical method lifecycle.
In recognition of the importance of alignment between regulators, pharmacopoeias and stakeholders, a joint online workshop was held in February 2021 between MHRA and Pharmacopoeia of the United States on the pharmacopoeial application of AQbD and analytical lifestyle concepts. The workshop was attended by industry speakers, ICH experts. Working groups, MHRA and United States Pharmacopoeia.
The British Pharmacopoeia Commission has prepared this British Pharmacopoeia 2022 under Regulation 317 (1) of the Human Medicine Regulations 2012 and in accordance with Regulation 317 (4), the Ministers have arranged for its publication.
British Pharmacopoeia 2022 plays an important role in the quality control of pharmaceutical products for human consumption. It contains publicly available, legally enforceable standards that provide an authoritative statement of the standards that are expected of a product, content or article at any time during its use. Pharmacopoeial standards are designed to help complete and support the licensing and inspection process and are part of the overall system to protect the health of drug buyers and users in the UK.
British Pharmacopoeia also has an important role to play internationally, which is being used all over the world and is referenced in the national legislation of many countries. The British Pharmacopoeia Commission would like to commend the services of all those who have contributed to this important work.
